FAQs

What makes your cakes better than the rest?

It’s important that our products look incredible, and a lot of time and skill goes into the planning, preparation and execution. Aside from using natural talent, Lorraine has undertaken a number of courses to enhance and extend her skills with various design elements, and spends a great deal of time honing these skills. But it’s even more important that our products taste as good as they look. Everything is individually hand crafted, using quality ingredients – New Zealand butter, free range eggs, couverture chocolate, the occasional bit of booze, and a whole lot of love and attention to detail. Everything is taste-tested by Lorraine and her very willing band of helpers.

What is Italian meringue butter cream and how is it different?

Italian meringue buttercream is silky smooth, fluffy and indulgent but not overly sweet. It enhances the flavour of the cake rather than overpowering it. It is more complex to make than the American buttercream used on other products, and just tastes better.

What is a design element?

It’s those fancy schmancy bits that make you go wow. It may be sugar flowers, chocolate lace, sugar glass, a chocolate sculpture, gilded effects, to name but a few. And of course plenty of sparkle… These elements enhance the design – and are all edible.

Is your kitchen registered?

Most definitely. Every food business needs to registered, and Embellished Food Art is certified through the Hutt City Council. As part of the registration process, the kitchen and food safety processes are verified, and the business passed inspection with flying colours.

How long will the products last?

Cookies are sealed in airtight packaging and will stay fresh for up to two months. Cakes and cupcakes are best eaten within a week of collection.

How should I store the products?

Best stored in your tummy! Failing that, cookies are best kept in an airtight container at room temperature. Cakes and cupcakes with buttercream frosting should be covered and stored in the fridge, however fondant covered cakes should first be double-wrapped in cling film to reduce moisture affecting the fondant.

Can I freeze the products?

Cakes and cupcakes can be frozen after being double-wrapped in cling film. Cakes are best frozen cut into slabs or slices. Fondant covering on cakes does not freeze well for long periods – one month is the maximum recommended time. Fondant-covered cakes should be triple-wrapped in clingfilm with a layer of tinfoil. Cookies can be frozen, but icings may look faded when defrosted.

Are your products gluten-free?

Custom products can be made with gluten-free ingredients, but please note that they will be produced in the same kitchen as all of our other products, so while all care will be taken we cannot guarantee there will be no cross-contamination.

Are your products vegetarian?

The products are all vegetarian but they are not sugar-free, dairy-free or vegan. They have lots of goodies like butter and sugar and chocolate, and maybe even the odd drop of booze.

What are the ingredients in your products?

Click for Ingredients page. Note that the ingredients for customised products may vary slightly so please check prior to ordering if you have any allergies or special requirements.

Are macarons and macaroons different?

Macarons are intricate almond-based meringue pastries, sandwiched together with a filling of buttercream or ganache. Macaroons, along with having an extra ‘o’, are simple, hearty coconut-based cookies, or in the case of Scottish macaroons, potato-based. So yes, macarons and macaroons, while all tasty, are rather different.

Where are you based?

I have a brand new home kitchen in Normandale, Lower Hutt, with a beautiful view over the Hutt Valley. See below for delivery options.

Do you offer delivery?

Cookies can be couriered nationwide at additional cost. They will be packaged securely, however we cannot guarantee that they will arrive intact. Cakes and cupcakes are to be collected from Lower Hutt, but may be able to be delivered in the greater Wellington area at additional cost. Please enquire in advance if you require this service.

Supermarket cakes are cheaper. Why?

It’s like comparing apples with caviar. There really is no comparison. Our products are individually crafted. There is no production line. Each creation combines top quality ingredients with artistic talent and skills honed through hours of training, practice, planning and execution. Our pricing is calculated on this basis.

Can I have my cake and eat it too?

Why else would you buy a cake?

Can I become a taste tester?

You will have to join a very long queue, and you are unlikely to make it to the front.

I ate the whole cake in one go. How are you going to compensate me?

By letting you buy another one.
